3.3 Consider Public Safety
  • Reduce route hazards during the trail route flagging stage.
  • Avoid avalanche zones, hazardous trees and snags, undercut streambanks.
  • Avoid cliffs and embankments.
  • Avoid seasonal grizzly bear habitat, such as soapberry, equisetum communities, fish spawning areas. Ensure unobstructed vision where the trail passes through bear habitat and avoid noisy creeks near where possible.
  • Avoid dangerous creek or river fords.
  • Design trail and trail/road intersections for right-angle crossings as these are safest and they minimize the user's exposure to the road or railway.
