2.3 Assess User Demand
  • Assess how many people will use the trail and how many are appropriate. Assess the potential number of trail users by reviewing traffic counts, comparing use of similar facilities nearby, analysing park user surveys and provincial visitor surveys, understanding local recreation patterns, contacting local outdoors clubs and provincial outdoor recreation organizations.

  • Prepare a trail user profile by projecting the expected age, sex, origin, languages, group size, interests, time available, ability and other factors that may influence the specific trail design. Distinguish between resident and visitor use patterns and remember that residents may use the trail many times, while visitors may use it once.

  • Convert the expected number and type of users into visitor days and seasonal use patterns to help determine the requirements for parking, signs, trail surfacing, maintenance, and waste management.

  • Assess existing access and service facilities to decide if improvements are needed.

  • Assess the impact of trail promotion on trail use and maintenance. Coordinate trail planning with overall park information and marketing objectives.
