3.8 Plan for Waste Disposal
-
Plan a waste disposal strategy for the trail. Litter along the route, garbage
associated with overnight camping, and horse and human excrement all detract
from the visual quality of the trail. Bears habituated to human food can
be a problem and may have to be relocated or killed. Broken glass, cans,
bottle caps and plastic bags are also hazardous to wildlife.
-
Educate users on waste and require a "pack in-pack out" policy as the most
effective management practice.
-
Avoid other types of trail use where horse traffic is expected to be heavy,
-
Locate backcountry pit or other types of toilets in suitable soils.
