3.9 Reduce Maintenance Requirements

Good design reduces future trail maintenance costs. The environmental protection techniques described above improve the design quality of a trail as well as help reduce maintenance. Consider these three key methods to reduce maintenance:

  • locate the trail on well-drained soils,

  • traverse gentle slopes, avoid steep slopes prone to collecting rock or avalanche debris,

  • cross streams at their narrowest point where banks are most stable and least susceptible to channel changes.
