7.1 Specify Construction Techniques

These construction techniques apply to all types of trails. Refer to the specific trail design guidelines for different types of trails to decide what is appropriate in each setting.

  • Use design details and construction materials that are simple, functional, and complement the setting.
  • Use on-site or locally available materials in park wilderness zones. Limit the use of dimension lumber, concrete, asphalt or other imported construction materials to more intensively used management zones.
  • Select materials and construction techniques that blend into the natural setting. Avoid chemical preservative treatments of finishes where possible.
  • Minimize changes to the existing site conditions.
  • Select design details and construction materials that will reduce long term maintenance. For example, drainage dips require less maintenance than culverts.
  • Conduct a job/project safety analysis prior to starting construction.
